Daniel J. Siegel, M.D. and Tina Payne Bryson (2012) The Whole-Brain Child. 12 Revolutionary Strategies to Nurture Your Child’s Developing Mind, Survive Everyday Parenting Struggles, and Help Your Family Thrive.

In this practical book, Daniel J. Siegel, a neuropsychiatrist, and parenting expert Tina Payne Bryson present a revolutionary approach to child-rearing with twelve strategies that promote healthy brain development, leading to calmer and happier children. They make the new science of brain development accessible, explaining how the “upstairs brain,” responsible for decision-making and emotional regulation, is still maturing until the mid-twenties. In young children, emotions often override logic, which explains tantrums and other challenging behaviors. By using these insights, parents can turn difficult moments into opportunities for brain development and growth.

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Education Outcomes among Adolescents: Linking Survey and Administrative Data. Int J Environ Res Public Health. 2022 Sep 14;19(18):11564. doi: 10.3390/ijerph191811564. PMID: 36141833; PMCID: PMC9517426.

This study examined the relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and educational outcomes among adolescents in Manitoba, Canada. Data from 1,002 adolescents showed that those with an ACE history were significantly more likely to experience school suspensions, lower grades, and chronic absenteeism compared to those without ACEs. These findings highlight the impact of childhood adversity on educational outcomes and underscore the need for awareness and interventions in education policy.
