The empathetic role of the teacher in strengthening confidence and resilience

A teacher can play a crucial role in strengthening a secure attachment in children, especially those who have experienced traumatic events like war. By creating a stable and supportive environment in the classroom, the teacher can help the child regain a sense of safety and trust. If the teacher notices that a child is showing signs of anxiety or fear, perhaps when certain topics are discussed, they can approach the situation with calm and understanding attitude, offer individual attention, and reassure the child that their feelings are valid and that they have the space to express them. This approach not only supports the development of a positive relationship with authority figures but also contributes to the child’s overall emotional and social development.

Additionally, if the teacher observes that the child needs more support, they can gently suggest further steps, such as meeting with the school psychologist, who could help the child better understand and process their experiences. The teacher can also recommend therapeutic activities, such as art or relaxation techniques, which may be effective in helping the child express and process their emotions. This approach not only strengthens the secure attachment but also ensures that the child receives comprehensive care and professional support needed to overcome traumatic experiences, which is essential for their continued healthy development.
